Audience Research

For Audience Research we asked members of our class some questions to gain a better insight on what people like and don't like. We asked key questions which we believed we could use to gain a better insight into what people within the age group of 16-18 preferred.
These questions were;

  1. What is your favorite genre of film? (We asked this question because having the basic knowledge of what people of a selected age group like and don't like makes it easier to make successful films.)
  2. Who is your favorite director? (We asked this question because if a certain director had a larger fan base than others we can use the results to see what type of styles of films people like to watch such as an edgy raw bloody horror film over a slow moving mystery thriller horror film)
  3. Who is your favorite actor/actress? (This question is similar to the second question, from the results we can see who people like to watch and how they like characters portrayed in films.)
  4. How many times do you visit the cinema a year? (This question lets us know how often someone is willing to go to the cinema, with the ability to watch movies online for free these days this is an important question to be sure that Cinema isn't dying out)
  5. Would you consider joining film club? (The college runs it own film club, we asked this question because we were eager to know if people are interested in watching films and are willing to go to an event where a film is screen for free.)
  6. Where/how do you view films? (We asked this question to see if indeed for certain people still go to the cinema or if the internet has become the new form of watching film)
  7. Do you rent, buy or download films? (This question again to find out if people of our age group use illegal download sites to watch films over the traditional and legal buying/renting methods)
  8. Have you seen any crime genre films? If so what are they...(we wanted to find out if people our age actually watched crime films, and if so what films they are. This can be used to find any trends in what type crime films people of our age group respond best to)
  9. What is your favorite crime film? Answer if you answered yes to 8.......(The results from this question again tie in with what people of our age group like to see in a crime film.)
  10. Are you aware of Crime sub-genres? (This is an interesting question to find out if people know that different crime films are different genres of if they categorize crime films as just a Crime Genre)

From the research gathered its clear that crime films are a popular part of youth culture, there seems to a running trend in popularity in fills associated with drugs, guns and street violence. People of this specific age group also tend to download films rather than going to the cinema which poses the worrying question "is cinema a dying art of viewing film?"
